OmniDiskSweeper is a simple and completely free tool. With it, you can find the files and folders on your hard drive which take up too much of your computer's memory. When you run the program, you'll see a list of all the units connected to your Mac. Once you select the hard drive you want to analyze, you'll see a list of all its different folders organized by increasing size. This way, you can find out which folders take up the most space on your memory. OmniDiskSweeper lets you not only control the storage space, but also copy files onto other hard drives or delete them if you don't need them anymore. Be careful when deleting files, though, since the program won't let you recover them if you delete one by mistake. In short, if your hard drive is too full and you need to locate the largest files, this simple program will help you do so in an efficient way.

The Omni Group, the same folks who have graced Mac OS X machines everywhere with the cocoa-based Web browser OmniWeb, have released a new version of OmniDiskSweeper. It’s a Mac OS X-native utility used to find and delete files on your hard drive. The software flags files used by your system, so you can avoid deleting anything important.

Changes introduced in this new release include:

  • Updated user interface for OS X.
  • Main list of drives is more like Finder, less like UNIX.
  • Faster parsing of installed packages.

  • Each drive window saves its frame independently.

“OmniDiskSweeper can be used for free to find the big files on your disks, but we also have a neat-o, incredibly high-tech ‘delete’ button which we enable if you fork over a couple of dollars at our online store,” writes the Omni Group. “Sure, you could delete the files yourself the hard way, but for the price of a couple of Big Macs which will probably kill you from heart disease in later years, you can have a nice, simple button that deletes for you.”
